Postojna Cave
Predjama Castle
Predjama Castle is like something pulled straight out of a fantasy movie, literally clinging to the side of a massive 123-meter cliff, half built into a cave, half out in the open. It’s actually the largest cave castle in the world, and once you see it, you’ll get why it’s such a jaw-dropper. Just a short drive from Postojna Cave, it makes for the perfect next stop on a day of exploring underground wonders.
This place has been around for over 800 years and comes with its own legendary rebel hero: Erazem of Predjama. He was kind of like a medieval Robin Hood, who used secret tunnels in the cave behind the castle to sneak out food and supplies while being under siege.
When you visit, you get to wander through old stone rooms, narrow staircases, hidden passages, and even a dungeon that’s pretty spooky. There’s also a natural cave system right beneath the castle, which was used for escape routes and storage. It’s one of those places where history, nature, and drama all collide, and it’s absolutely worth the stop.
Škocjan Caves
The Škocjan Caves are part of a massive underground system carved by the Reka River, and what makes them truly mind-blowing is the gigantic underground canyon inside. It is UNESCO World Heritage Site and they’re home to the largest known underground canyon in the world.
No photography is allowed inside the caves.
